Jason Vale’s 3 day detox – Day one

As my diet lately has consisted mostly of pizza, alcohol, crisps and chocolate, I thought I’d take drastic measures and go on Jason Vale’s 7lbs in 7 Days Super Juice Diet.

I read the book in one sitting, ordered a juicer and a blender and then decided 7 days was too long to go without eating anything and as my juicer came with a free copy of Juice Master Keeping It Simple, I thought I’d do the 3 day detox that’s in there instead.

This involves consuming, in liquid form, the following fruit and veg over three days:

detox 003

That’s 3 carrots, 22 apples, 3 lemons, 1 yellow bell pepper, 1 1/2 cucumber, 3 celery sticks, 3 broccoli stems, 1 large beetroot, 2 pieces ginger, small handful parsley, 2 avocados, 1/4 cup blackberries, 1/4 cup blueberries, 1 medium pineapple, 1lb spinach, 3 1/2 litres water, 1 tub natural live yoghurt.

Celery got missed off my shopping list and I did buy beetroot but forgot to take it out of the cupboard to include in the photo and only remembered after I’d put everything else back. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the avocado. I hate avocados. Bleurgh. But I don’t want to leave them out because they are very good for you and I’ve got to get some calories from somewhere.

Jason Vale reckons that in three days, I’ll have a flatter stomach (not that I’m overweight; I’m 5′ 6″ and weighed in at 9st 6 and 3/4 this morning, but I would like to lose half a stone although obviously I’m not expecting to lose weight in three days), a better mental state and I won’t want to eat so much crap. Yay. He also says to not watch any TV for three days as it’s a mind polluter but that’s just bollocks so I’m going to ignore that bit.

Each day starts with a cup of hot water with a slice of lemon. This doesn’t bother me in the slightest as I gave up ‘normal’ tea a few years ago and had lemon and water then.

Don’t you just love my cow mug ? I’ve got a pig mug too.

Then breakfast, lunch, linner (a horrible word Jason’s made up meaning in between lunch and dinner), and evening ‘meal’ is a juice or smoothie.

Day one’s breakfast is the Detox Special:

This contains 2 apples, 1 carrot, 1 slice lemon, 1/4 yellow bell pepper, 1 inch slice cucumber, 1/4 piece celery (if you don’t forget to buy it, like I did), 1 inch broccoli stem, 1 inch slice raw beetroot, ice.

I usually have a banana smoothie for breakfast, so a juice won’t be too much of a change. Everything gets juiced, then ice is added afterwards (or crush it in a blender). Due to the beetroot, this turns out a gorgeous crimson colour

and it tastes good too – kind of like creamy apple juice – which is handy as it’s also going to be today’s lunch.

12:45pm

I’m back from the gym and feeling peckish. It’s lunchtime and what I’d really like is a cheese sandwich (although I don’t usually have sandwiches for lunch; I usually have soup in the winter and salad in the summer and I probably want a sandwich now because I can’t have one) but I’ve got to have the Detox Special again. I’m quite surprised I’ve got to have the same juice twice in a row but it’s the only time during the three days anything’s repeated in the same day.

In between lunch and dinner, I have to drink the H2O Detox which is 1 inch beetroot, 1/2 an apple, 1 inch slice pineapple, 1 inch slice lemon and 3/4 litre of water. Jason Vale reckons it’s lighter than a juice but more filling than water. I hope so, as I’ve just had ‘lunch’ and I’m still hungry.

detox 016

I used tap water and it’s a bit weird, although not unpleasant, kind of like very weak pineapple flavoured water. I think sparkling water would work better.

I’m getting a bit bored of drinking red liquid and my hands are very dry after washing the juicer three times already today.

6.30pm

It’s taken me all afternoon to drink the H2O Detox and I’m hungry and it is dinnertime but I decide to wait a while to have my ‘dinner’ and have a cup of Yogi tea instead. I think I’m allowed to drink herbal tea aren’t I?

Meanwhile, The Meat Eater’s taking advantage of the fact that I’m not cooking anything for three days and barbecues himself a steak.

About an hour later, I give in to my stomach which is rumbling noisily and make Beyond Detox. This contains 3 apples, 1 large handful of spinach, 1 inch of beetroot, 1 inch slice cucumber, parsley which is all juiced, then blended in a blender with avocado and ice.

I’m not looking forward to trying this as I hate avocado, and spinach juice doesn’t sound particularly appetising, but it’s quite nice and actually tastes like banana. Unfortunately, I didn’t blend the avocado properly and so have to eat lumps of avocado and it takes me about 30 minutes to finish my dinner but it’s certainly very filling. It’s just as well it tasted ok, as I’ve got to have it another two times.

So, that’s day one done and I’ve survived so far. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s breakfast which is a blueberry and blackberry smoothie.

I could do with a pizza though.

  1. I am considering trying Jason Vale’s plan as similar to yourself I am not overweight but seem to be living on crisps and chocolate lately. Enjoyed the first instalment but interested to see how it went from there?!

  2. This is so funny, Its exactly how I felt when I did the lifestyle change 2 week one! Gave up after a week…thought it was making me depressed, turns out it was that time of the month and I didnt realise! Its nice, but I was kinda starving and unsatisfied for a week straight! and 2 hours of exercise, who has time for that with a job????

  3. Hi I have just completed the 7 day plan and felt great! if you can get over day 2 then its worth doing the 7 day plan. I have lost 10lbs and everyone is commenting on how much energy i have not too mention my clear skin. I am now on the Jason Vale 14 turbo charge

  4. Will start the 3 day detox tomorrow. Am excited and a bit anxious, at the same time. Thanks for your info

  5. This is the second time that I’ve followed this 3 day plan. I’ve been on a wine and junk food binge for weeks so thought it’s time to turn my body back into a temple!! I’m approaching lunch time on day 1, so quite a way to go but looking forward to reaping the rewards in a couple of days time.

  6. I have started my 3 Day Detox today – had my glass of warm water with lemon thsi morning – juiced 2 glasses of Detox Special – has 1 for breakfast and brought 1 for lunch at work………will fit in some zumba in the evening to help me along – Am amazed that i feel so much better so quickly even though I had chinese last night – Good luck everyone

  7. Oh and I have asked hubby to empty the fridge of any leftovers from last night and any other foods that may make me binge before I get home – will also record the programs on TV that I like on Sky Box and watch them when I have achieved my 3 days – Full Proof Plan – Fingers crossed

  8. Hello Planetveggie,
Thanks for that, There’s a diet book by Jason Vale in which you detox and lose weight through having juices and smoothies for 7 days. Anyone tried this at all? How well did it work? How do you get used to eating no food? Not sure I could do it!
    All the Best

    1. That’s the one I was going to do first, but my juicer came with one of Jason Vale’s other juice/smoothie books and that had the 3 day detox, so I wimped out of the 7 day one and did the 3 day one instead. Thanks for visiting my blog!

  9. My daughter just emailed me that shes bought loads fruit for the lose 7lb in 7 days diet. Trouble is shes only 8 stone at the most. Thinks shes put on weight over xmas as she is normally 7st something.?? Hope its safe?

  10. Hi! Well done on completing the programme! I did the 7 day one last month and it went well! I am considering starting this next week, just wondering, was it a whole avocado you used in the ‘Beyond detox’ recipe? Thanks!

  11. I started the 3 day detox yesterday and have to say that I have already caved in at the first hurdle. I was prepared mentally as well as preparing the fridge. I prepared the juices and they were all ready and lined up to bring into work. I had the Juice in the morning and had half of the one for lunch with no liners only regular water in between.

I got the worlds worst headache when i got home that i had to crawl up the stairs. Having a two and half year old screaming was not helping either. I am a migraine sufferer so am not sure if this headache was related to that.

I ended up giving up on another serving of Juice and made healthy Prawns for dinner and ate them then did my head feel slightly better – but only becuase i slept the headache off it went away.

I did however prepare the juices and smoothies for the next day – i had the smoothie and didn’t like the taste much – I am a lover of sugar and this wasn’t sweet enough for me. I only managed to have half. I will try the dreamy detox for lunch and see how i go but i have had to have a coffee in between to avoid another reoccuring headache that seems to be merging!!

I feel so bad as i so want to do this but it is prooving to be very difficult for me 🙁

  12. I used this as a shopping list and had to go back to the grocery store at night time as didn’t have enough acocado for the next morning. The 3 day cleanse requires 4 1/2 avocados not 2 and I needed about 10 lemons not 3……if you are doing lemon juice and hot water in the morning as well as juicing them and more than one beet….

  13. Cleansing what anyway? The human body is really good at detoxing itself – that’s what your liver and kidneys do.
Ask yourself whether the 3 Day or 7 Day detox diets are really nutritionally balanced? 3/4 pineapple and 6 apples a day for 7 days? – all that fruit sugar going straight to your bloodstream three or four times a day?
All we need is a return to wholefoods with plenty of green veg – be kind to your digestive system and give it some fibre!

    1. Cleansing bad eating habits, sedentary lifestyles, juicing literally saved my life and yes Jason Vale’s plans are very well nutritionally balanced.
